This ambrotype
of the Justin Morrell House in Strafford, Vermont serves as a good example
of the advantages of digital archiving.
In the process
of scanning images in the collection of Chelsea (VT) Historical Society,
Macy Lawrence noted that the collection included photographs of Justin
Morrell and his house in nearby Strafford. He sent a laser print of one
of the scans to John Dumville, Vermont's supervisor of State Historic
Sites, since Dumville might not have been aware of these images.
Not long
after, PhotoArk was contacted by an organization called Friends of Justin
Morrell House, wanting to use a reproduction of the ambrotype as part
of their Vermont History Expo display.
After some
digital restoration of the file, PhotoArk produced a stunning 30"X40"
inkjet print for the Expo, thus allowing a large audience access to this
image without it ever leaving the Chelsea Historical Society's collection.
