SHERM HOWE

Sherman Howe integrates a rare fusion of talents and experience that perfectly suits him to advise PhotoArk clients - especially museums and historical societies - on the proper handling of their historical photo collections. The senior member of the PhotoArk staff combines 40 years of work as a photographer and a photo technician with a background as a successful curator.

As curator of the Woodstock (VT) Historical Society’s Photo Collection, Howe took over a collection of thousands of deteriorating images that were not catalogued. His voice was instrumental in convincing the society’s board of directors to make copy prints which he then catalogued and gave a variety of layers of protection, including the initiation of a digitization program that is continuing.

Recognized as a highly accomplished conservator, Howe has also consulted and advised to preserve and conserve collections held by the Billings Farm Library, the Billings Family, and the personal photo treasury of Mary French Rockefeller. All of these images are now part of the Billings-Marsh National Park collections. As a conservator, Howe has also worked on the Barnard (VT) Historical Society collection. And he has consulted with numerous other historical societies throughout Vermont on their collections.

Howe’s background as a conservator along with his command of photographic and computer technology integrates expertise in collection management with the newest technical developments to provide our clients with affordable, high quality, cutting edge methods for preservation, for productive utilization by scholars, and for promotion of their photo resources. He recently updated his expertise by attending advanced workshops in digitization sponsored by the Rochester Institute of Technology and the George Eastman Institute.

CHARLIE RATTIGAN Charles Rattigan works with PhotoArk on video production projects. His work as a documentary film maker and video producer has been seen on PBS and Vermont Public Television. His living history documentary about Calvin Coolidge, "More Than Two Words," is used in classrooms throughout the US.
